A Pongau village on the Ski Amadé network

Kleinarl is a municipality in the St. Johann im Pongau district of the Austrian state of Salzburg, the same district as Grossarl, and like its neighbour it is a village first and a ski resort second. Its lifts belong to Ski Amadé, the Salzburg lift-pass alliance, and the 120 km of pistes attributed to Kleinarl reflect the linked area those lifts feed into rather than a mountain that belongs to the village alone. That distinction matters for expectations: the village itself stays small-scale and traditional in feel, but the skiing on the pass is on the scale of a major resort.

120 km, 34 lifts, 2,000 m

The lift system runs from 1,014 m to 2,000 m, serving 120 km of pistes with 34 lifts. The vertical of just under 1,000 m is moderate, and the top height of exactly 2,000 m sits below the altitude where elevation alone secures the snow, so Kleinarl is a core-winter resort with a December to April season best enjoyed in its middle months. The village base at 1,014 m is, however, higher than that of many Salzburg valley resorts, which helps the lower runs keep their cover when milder spells arrive.

Thirty-four lifts for 120 km is a dense network, working out at roughly 3.5 km of piste per lift, and it points to a well-linked area where moving between sectors is easy and queues are spread out. No difficulty breakdown is published, but a mid-mountain area of this size and shape is classic intermediate and family territory: long, linked pistes at friendly gradients rather than steep, technical faces. Stronger skiers will find enough mileage to stay busy, though the numbers suggest breadth rather than challenge.

Character

Traditional charm and scenic views are the qualities Kleinarl is rated on, and both follow from being a working Salzburg municipality rather than a purpose-built station. For skiers who want big-area skiing with a small-village base, the combination is the point: sleep somewhere quiet, ski somewhere big. The wider Ski Amadé pass extends the options further for anyone who wants to travel to other areas during the week, and Grossarl, in the same district, is one of the nearest.
