Bansko

From stockbreeders to digital nomads

Bansko is a town in south-western Bulgaria, in Blagoevgrad Oblast, near the city of Razlog. Its past was in stockbreeding and travelling merchants; its present is as an international centre for winter and summer tourism. More recently it has acquired a third identity as a hotspot for digital nomads, drawn by a combination of relative affordability and natural scenery. The town sits at around 990 m, where the lifts begin.

The skiing

The ski area is compact, 48 km of pistes on 14 lifts, but the vertical is not: from 990 m at the town to 2,560 m at the top is a drop of more than 1,570 m, larger than that of several resorts with three or four times the piste length. The top station sits comfortably above the 2,200 m mark that matters for snow reliability, so the upper slopes are the dependable part; the long run down to town at 990 m will vary with the winter.

The lift system is tagged as modern, which on a mountain with this much vertical is important: the way up is long, and a fast lift changes the shape of the day. Fourteen lifts on 48 km is a reasonable density, though in a busy week that small number can put pressure on the way up, which is where the modern lift system earns its keep. No difficulty split is published, but a compact area with a big vertical suits intermediates who want long runs more than experts who want variety, and it is easy for beginners to find their way around a mountain with only 14 lifts.

Après-ski and town

Bansko is tagged for après-ski and for traditional charm, and it manages both. The transformation from a stockbreeding and merchant town into an international resort is the story of the place, and the mix of old town and new tourism infrastructure is what visitors notice first; the merchant history survives in the character, while the tourism boom has brought a lively evening scene. Relative affordability, the same quality that attracts the digital nomads, is part of the resort’s appeal for skiers too, and the fact that the town is busy in summer as well means the restaurants and services are not purely seasonal. Summer tourism, the digital nomads and the winter trade between them keep Bansko busy for much of the year.

Practicalities

Sofia is the nearest airport, roughly 96 km away as the crow flies. The season runs from December to April. The town’s official website carries local information.
