Portillo

High in the Chilean Andes

Portillo is a ski resort in the Andes of Chile’s Valparaíso Region, 61 km from Los Andes, the nearest city, and 160 km by road from Santiago. It is not a village: its hotel sits at 2,880 m above sea level, higher than the top lift station of many Alpine resorts, and everything about the place follows from that altitude.

The skiing

Ski Portillo has 35 named runs and 13 lifts, spread across 20 km of groomed piste, with a further 10 km of ungroomed ski routes for those who want more. The lowest lift loads at 2,548 m and the highest reaches 3,310 m, which gives a vertical drop of 762 m. Skiing at that height is the point of Portillo. With the lowest lift already above 2,500 m, snow reliability is about as good as lift-served skiing gets, and the snow-sure tag in our data is fully deserved; even the bottom of the lowest run is at an altitude where Alpine resorts would site their top stations. The season runs from June to October, the Southern Hemisphere winter, which is precisely why Northern Hemisphere skiers come: it offers winter conditions during what is summer at home.

The pistes are not graded in our figures, and 20 km is small by the standards of a European linked area. Portillo is not about mileage. It is about the setting, the altitude and a compact, high mountain where 13 lifts keep everything within reach of the hotel. Thirteen lifts for 20 km is a dense ratio, roughly one lift per 1.5 km, so uplift is rarely the constraint on a day’s skiing.

Giants on every side

The mountain’s own summit, Ojos de Agua, reaches 4,222 m, and nearby peaks include Los Tres Hermanos at 4,751 m and La Paraya at 4,831 m. Across the Argentine border stands Aconcagua, at 6,961 m the highest mountain in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres and taller than anything outside the Himalayas, Karakoram, Pamir and Tien Shan of Asia.
