The Czech Republic’s busiest ski town

Špindlerův Mlýn, known in German as Spindlermühle, is a small town of about 1,100 inhabitants in the Trutnov District of the Hradec Králové Region, in the north of the Czech Republic. It lies in the Giant Mountains (the Krkonoše) on the upper course of the Elbe, and it is one of the most frequented ski resorts in the country. For a town of its size, that popularity gives it an unusually busy winter.

The skiing

The ski area is small by Alpine standards: 25 km of pistes served by 18 lifts, with skiing from about 702 m up to 1,235 m. The vertical is a little over 500 m, and the modest altitude means the snow is entirely dependent on the winter rather than on height. Within those limits, the resort makes good use of what it has. Eighteen lifts for 25 km is a dense system, so queues are the exception rather than the rule and the runs are quick to reach. The 500 m of vertical is modest, but on a compact hill it is enough for the runs to feel like proper descents rather than nursery slopes. The terrain suits beginners, families and intermediates who want a few days of skiing rather than a week of exploration, and the December to April season is best in its middle months when the Giant Mountains have their most reliable cover.

For visitors from further afield, Špindlerův Mlýn is best understood as a national resort rather than an international one. Its popularity within the Czech Republic reflects accessibility and atmosphere more than raw statistics, and expectations should be set accordingly. That said, for a weekend from Prague, about 118 km away as the crow flies, it delivers exactly what most visitors want: a compact mountain, good lift capacity and a town to enjoy afterwards.

Town and character

The town has a traditional mountain character and a scenic position in the Elbe valley, and the apres-ski is lively, which is a large part of why Czech skiers return. The Giant Mountains are the country’s highest range, and the views from the upper lifts are a genuine draw. It is a resort for a sociable short break with skiing at its centre, rather than a destination for mileage. The Elbe runs through the town on its upper course, and the surrounding Giant Mountains give the views from the lifts their scale.
