The oldest ski resort in the Pyrenees

Font-Romeu is the oldest ski resort in the Pyrenees and one of the oldest in France. It is one of three villages, with Odeillo and Via, that make up the commune of Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via in the Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Cerdagne near the Spanish border in the south of France. The commune is sometimes referred to simply as Odeillo, but it is the Font-Romeu name that carries the skiing.

The skiing: Font-Romeu Pyrénées 2000

The ski area is Font-Romeu Pyrénées 2000, with 43 km of pistes and 23 lifts. The elevation profile is the interesting part. The base sits at 1,712 m, which is higher than many Alpine resorts’ villages, and the top station is at 2,213 m. The vertical is therefore modest, about 500 m, but the whole area operates at altitude, and with the top station above 2,200 m, height helps snow reliability.

Twenty-three lifts for 43 km is a dense network, under 2 km of piste per lift, which means short lifts and quick laps rather than long journeys. Read together, the numbers describe a compact, high area where you spend more time skiing than travelling between sectors. Our data does not split the 43 km by difficulty, and the only characteristic flagged is scenic views, which the Cerdagne setting supplies.

Font-Romeu has been a ski resort for longer than anywhere else in the Pyrenees, and the 1,712 m base is the most likely reason it has lasted: it is the altitude that makes the difference in the shoulder months, and it remains the strongest argument for skiing here at either end of the season.
