An Olympic freestyle venue in Pyeongchang county

Phoenix Park goes by several names. Its formal name is Phoenix Pyeongchang, and it is also known as Phoenix Snow Park or Bokwang Snow Park. The resort lies in the township of Bongpyeong-myeon in the county of Pyeongchang, and it earned a place on the world map in 2018 when it hosted the freestyle skiing and snowboarding events of the Winter Olympics and, afterwards, the Winter Paralympics. The competition venue was built to hold 18,000 spectators, 10,200 of them seated and 7,800 standing, a scale that says a lot about how seriously the freestyle events were staged here.

Compact terrain, quick laps

Away from the Olympic story the resort is small by European measures: 15.3 km of pistes served by 11 lifts, with a base at 700 m and a top station at 1,050 m. That is 350 m of vertical, so runs are short and a day here is built around repetition rather than long descents. Roughly 1.4 km of piste per lift makes the network dense for its size, and most of the mountain is reachable within a couple of rides. Do not read the altitude as a snow guarantee; read it instead as a resort that is easy to reach and easy to ski, with no long climb to the base and none of the thin air or exposure that comes with high Alpine terrain. For a first ski trip, or for a group mixing skiers with non-skiers, that accessibility counts for more than vertical.

Views and screen fame

The one feature flag in our data is scenic views, and the resort has a second kind of fame that draws visitors who never clip into a binding: it was one of the filming locations for the television drama Autumn in My Heart. Between the Olympic venue and the drama connection, Phoenix Park attracts sightseers as well as skiers, which is worth knowing if you are choosing between Korean resorts on skiing alone.
