Two mountains and a storied town

Sun Valley is a resort town in Blaine County, Idaho, tucked into the Wood River valley next to the city of Ketchum. Its permanent population was just 1,783 at the 2020 census, yet the name carries weight far beyond its size: the region has been a seasonal home to the rich and famous since Ernest Hemingway brought it to public attention in the late 1930s. The town itself sits at 1,805 m (5,920 ft), measured at the Lodge.

Baldy and Dollar

Among skiers, Sun Valley means two distinct mountains. Bald Mountain, known simply as Baldy, rises beside Ketchum to a summit of 2,790 m (9,150 ft) with a vertical drop of 1,035 m (3,400 ft). It is best suited to intermediate, advanced and expert skiers, and a top elevation of that height means altitude helps snow reliability through the season. Dollar Mountain, adjacent to Sun Valley itself, is the opposite kind of hill: treeless, topping out at 2,023 m (6,638 ft) with a gentle 191 m (628 ft) of vertical, and set aside for novices and lower intermediates. Separating learners from strong skiers on two different mountains is a sensible arrangement, since beginners get open, unhurried slopes without fast traffic passing them.

The numbers

Our data records 121 km of runs and 18 lifts, with a base at 1,752 m and a top at 2,789 m. The lift system is one of the resort’s tagged strengths, together with traditional charm and scenic views, and 18 lifts for 121 km suggests a well-covered mountain with plenty of ways back up, most likely a mix of long lifts on Baldy and shorter, learner-friendly ones on Dollar. Our data does not split the runs by difficulty, but the division described above, Baldy for the confident and Dollar for the cautious, gives a clearer picture than percentages would.

Beyond the ski area

The wider Sun Valley region takes in Ketchum and the Wood River Valley as it winds south to Hailey and Bellevue. Visitors are relatively close to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, reached over Galena Summit on State Highway 75, the Sawtooth Scenic Byway, which gives non-skiing days somewhere to go.

Practical

Scheduled passenger flights land at Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) in Hailey, about 25 km (15 miles) south by road and roughly 20 km away as the crow flies, an unusually short transfer for a major North American resort. The season runs from December to April, and the town’s official website carries current information.
