Grandvalira’s twin villages

Soldeu is a village and ski resort in the parish of Canillo in Andorra, high in the Pyrenees, and together with its neighbour El Tarter it forms one of the main bases for Grandvalira, the principality’s largest linked ski area. The two villages sit a short way apart along the same valley and share the same mountain, so they are usually treated as a single destination with two access points.

The skiing

Grandvalira offers 210 km of pistes and 67 lifts, with skiing from about 1,710 m up to 2,560 m. For the Pyrenees, those are big numbers. The 210 km puts the area in the same league as many well-known Alpine resorts, and 67 lifts for that mileage means the system is dense and modern, with capacity to spare. The base altitude of over 1,700 m is high, and with the skiing topping out above 2,500 m the area is reliably snow-sure across the December to April season.

The vertical of around 850 m is the one modest figure, so runs are wide and numerous rather than long. That layout suits beginners and intermediates particularly well: there is a lot of accessible terrain, the snow is dependable, and the sheer size of Grandvalira gives a week’s holiday a sense of progress from one sector to the next. Stronger skiers will find enough to keep busy, but the appeal is breadth rather than steepness. With so many lifts, the area also copes well with the traffic that a resort of this size attracts in peak weeks, and moving between the Soldeu and El Tarter sides of the mountain is straightforward.

Villages and character

Soldeu and El Tarter have a lively apres-ski scene, and the area has long attracted skiers who want value without sacrificing the size of the ski area. It is a modern resort in feel, with the infrastructure to match the lift system, and Andorra’s position in the Pyrenees gives it a distinct character from the Alps. The village sits high enough, at over 1,700 m, that the snow generally reaches the resort itself rather than stopping on the mountain above, which is a practical advantage for families with young children.
