The fever well

Fieberbrunn owes its name to a legend. The Tyrolean Countess Margarete Maultasch was said to have been cured of a fever after drinking from the fountain near the church, and the “fever well” gave its name first to the fountain and then to the market town, which had previously been called Pramau. The town lies in the Kitzbühel district of Tyrol, in the Kitzbühel Alps, and is the most populous municipality of the Pillerseetal valley.

The skiing

Fieberbrunn is one of the four names in the Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn, and the figures here belong to that whole linked area: 270 km of pistes and 70 lifts, running from 830 m to a top station at 2,020 m. Our data flags the resort for modern lifts, and 70 lifts for 270 km is a dense network, roughly 4 km of piste per lift, so getting around the Skicircus is a matter of connections rather than long traverses. The altitude is moderate, with the top barely above 2,000 m, so this is not an area that relies on height for its snow.

What sets Fieberbrunn apart within the Skicircus is its big-mountain profile. Since 2006 it has hosted SNOWFEVER, one of the biggest Big Mountain events in Austria, and it stages international snowboarding events such as Lords of the Boards. Combine that with the off-piste flag in our data and the picture is clear: Fieberbrunn is the freeride corner of a very large piste network, the place to be based if you want both. Market town, summer lake

Fieberbrunn is a market town rather than a purpose-built station, which accounts for its traditional-charm flag, and the Kitzbühel Alps around it earn the scenic-views flag. Schloss Rosenegg is nearby. In summer the town turns to hiking and mountaineering, and the Lauchsee bathing lake is an important draw in the warmer months.

For a skier deciding where to base themselves within the Skicircus, the choice comes down to what each village adds to the shared 270 km. Fieberbrunn’s additions are the freeride events, the off-piste flag and a market town that predates the lifts by a long way, and a Salzburg transfer of roughly 49 km is a further practical argument for starting the week here.

Practical

Salzburg is the nearest airport at roughly 49 km as the crow flies, a short transfer by Alpine standards. The season runs from December to April. Lift and event information is on the official website.
