71 European resorts in our list had a 2026/27 opening date on or before 5 December 2026, checked 20 September 2026. Some come from the resort’s own site and some from season calendars; the opening dates page marks which. Levi and Ruka in Finland open first, on 2 October, then three glaciers in October. November brings most early openers, and the first December weekend alone adds 35 more, from the SkiWelt to Les 3 Vallées. In North America only four resorts in our list had a date confirmed on their own site: Lake Louise and Breckenridge on 6 November, Sun Peaks on 21 November and Beaver Creek on 25 November. Altitude, not the calendar, decides who skis first.

Key takeaways

  • 71 European resorts in our list have a 2026/27 opening date on or before 5 December 2026.
  • Levi and Ruka open first, on 2 October, from tops of only 531 m and 492 m. Three glaciers follow: Stubaier Gletscher, Kaprun, Engelberg.
  • 35 resorts open on 4 to 5 December alone, including the SkiWelt, Zillertal Arena and Les 3 Vallées.
  • Four North American resorts had a date on their own site when we checked: Lake Louise and Breckenridge (6 November), Sun Peaks (21 November), Beaver Creek (25 November). Most others had not announced one.

October openers: glaciers and Lapland

Four resorts open in October, three of them glaciers: Stubaier Gletscher on 9 October at 3,210 m, then Kaprun‘s Kitzsteinhorn and Engelberg‘s Titlis, both on 10 October, at 3,029 m and 3,020 m. Levi is the exception: first of all, on 2 October, from just 531 m, on snow farmed the previous winter rather than altitude. See ski resorts in Finland.

November openers

29 resorts open in November. Swiss resorts lead on 7 November: Mürren and the linked pair Arosa and Lenzerheide. Solden‘s glacier opens 12 November; the 4 Vallées trio led by Verbier opens 14 November. Tignes opens 21 November, Ischgl on 26 November, and the month closes with Les Deux Alpes, this list’s highest resort at 3,600 m, on 28 November.

What opens the first weekend of December

36 resorts open in the first five days of December, 35 on 4 and 5 December. St. Anton opens just before, on 2 December. The wave is dominated by lift-linked networks: Austria’s SkiWelt (Söll, Ellmau, Scheffau, Westendorf, Going am Wilden Kaiser) and the Zillertal Arena (Zell am Ziller, Gerlos). France’s Les 3 Vallées opens the same weekend at Courchevel, Meribel and Les Menuires, sharing 600 km. On a shared network the totals are identical for every village: what differs is altitude and character, not terrain.

Why altitude decides it

Line up dates against elevation and the pattern is direct. Every October opener except Levi tops 3,000 m, as do the last November openers, Les Deux Alpes at 3,600 m and Val d’Isère at 3,456 m. The first December weekend clusters lower: the SkiWelt tops out at 1,957 m, Zell am Ziller’s base is 580 m. A high top holds snow regardless of the valley; a low base waits for cold nights. Levi opens 2 October from 531 m on stored snow and cold latitude instead. Our guide to vertical drop in skiing explains how top and base elevation work together.

North America’s early openers

Four US and Canadian resorts in our list had published a 2026/27 opening date on their own site when we checked on 20 September 2026. Lake Louise in Canada and Breckenridge in Colorado both plan to open on 6 November; Breckenridge’s 3,914 m top lift, the Imperial Express, is the highest in this article and its base sits at 2,926 m. Sun Peaks follows on 21 November and Beaver Creek on 25 November. Vail, Keystone and Park City had not yet named a day. Season calendars list earlier dates for several Colorado resorts, but we found those to disagree with the resorts’ own pages, so we do not repeat them here. As in Europe, the earliest openers have the highest base.

How to book an early trip safely

Every date here is a plan, not a guarantee: snowfall can push it back. Favour a high base or a glacier, which depend less on fresh snow. Treat December-weekend dates as provisional until confirmed, or wait until the destination has actually opened. Run the numbers with the ski trip cost calculator, and check conditions with our what to wear tool.

What is not yet announced

Many Italian, German and Scandinavian resorts had not published 2026/27 opening dates as of 19 September 2026. That is normal this early: many confirm only closer to the first snowfall, which does not mean they open later. Our opening dates page updates as new dates arrive, and current prices are in our lift pass index.

Quick answers

Which ski resort opens first for 2026/27?

Levi and Ruka in Finland, both on 2 October 2026, from tops of just 531 m and 492 m, on stored snow rather than altitude.

Which European ski resorts open in October 2026?

Five: Levi and Ruka (2 October), Stubaier Gletscher (9 October), Kaprun and Engelberg (both 10 October), the last three glaciers above 3,000 m.

How many resorts open on the first weekend of December 2026?

35, on 4 or 5 December, including the SkiWelt, Zillertal Arena and Les 3 Vallées. St. Anton opens 2 December, just before.

Do North American resorts open before European ones?

No. The earliest North American date confirmed by a resort is 6 November, at Lake Louise and Breckenridge, five weeks after Levi and Ruka open in Finland on 2 October.

Why do some resorts open earlier than others?

Altitude. October and most November openers top 3,000 m or sit on a glacier. December openers typically top out below 2,000 m and rely on snowmaking.

Can I rely on an early opening date when booking?

Treat it as a plan, not a guarantee. Favour high-base or glacier resorts, or wait until the opening weekend is confirmed before booking.

Where can I find dates for resorts not in this list?

Our opening dates page tracks every resort in our database and updates as more 2026/27 dates arrive.
