Resort Highlights
A high valley between Chur and the Julier Pass
Lenzerheide, Lai in Romansh, is a mountain resort in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, lying at the foot of the Parpaner Rothorn in the municipality of Vaz/Obervaz. The village occupies a broadened section of a high valley on the road between Chur, the cantonal capital to the north, and Tiefencastel to the south, beyond which lie the Julier Pass and St Moritz. The valley itself forms a pass, usually called the Lenzerheide pass, whose high point is about 5 km north of the village. In winter the village lake, the Heidsee, freezes over.
Four sectors and a link to Arosa
The Lenzerheide Bergbahnen lifts open up four sectors: Stätzerhorn, Danis, Scalottas and Rothorn. At the end of 2013 a cable-car link to Arosa created the combined Arosa Lenzerheide ski area, and passes have covered both resorts since. That is where the headline figures come from: 225 km of pistes and 43 lifts, with the lifts spanning 1,476 m to 2,865 m.
What the slopes offer
Nearly 1,400 m of vertical and a top station well above 2,200 m give the high sectors a snow advantage across the December-to-April season, and the village base at 1,476 m is itself relatively high. The site’s modern-lifts rating fits a resort that added a whole new cable-car connection a little over a decade ago. There is no published easy, intermediate and expert breakdown in our data, but the slopes are approved for every FIS Alpine Ski World Cup discipline for both men and women, which requires steep, sustained racing terrain alongside the broader pistes that make up most of any area this size. Forty-three lifts for 225 km, a little over 5 km per lift, suggests longer lifts and longer runs rather than a dense grid.
The scenery rating is earned by the setting: a resort built around a lake, in a high valley with the Parpaner Rothorn above it.
On foot as well as on skis
Lenzerheide connects to two other Graubünden resorts by hiking route as well as by lift: Arosa can be reached in a day’s walk and Davos in two, an old link between valleys that the cable-car has made instant for skiers.
