Five peaks west of the Continental Divide

Breckenridge Ski Resort spreads across five mountain peaks above the town of Breckenridge in Summit County, Colorado, just west of the Continental Divide. It is owned and operated by Vail Resorts and is, year after year, one of the most visited ski resorts in the Western Hemisphere. The scale is considerable: 2,908 acres of terrain, a base elevation of 9,600 feet, and thousands of skiers and snowboarders passing through each season.

The skiing

Our stats give 187 km of pistes served by 35 lifts, with a clear breakdown by difficulty: 20 km easy, 103 km intermediate and 64 km expert. That balance tells you who the mountain is for. More than half the terrain is intermediate, so confident cruisers have the run of the place, while a third is rated expert, enough to keep strong skiers occupied for a week. The beginner share is small in kilometres, though the modern lift system and five terrain parks broaden the appeal for younger and freestyle-minded visitors.

Altitude is the defining feature. The base sits at 2,926 m and the Imperial Express, the highest chairlift in North America, tops out at 3,914 m, just below a 3,963 m summit. The effect on snow is straightforward: the whole area lies far above the 2,200 m mark where altitude starts to help, the season opens in November and runs to April, and the resort is listed as snow-sure. The trade-off is thin air. Visitors arriving from sea level should allow a day or two to acclimatise before pushing hard, because the base alone sits nearly 3,000 m up.

The vertical drop is 1,037 m, moderate compared with the sheer height of the place, which means the skiing is spread laterally across the five peaks rather than plunging to a distant valley floor.

Town and après

The resort takes its name from the town of Breckenridge at its foot, and the two are closely bound together. Après-ski is one of the resort’s listed strengths, and having a real town rather than a purpose-built base area is a large part of that. The resort’s base at 9,600 feet is in the town of Breckenridge itself, so the whole stay, on and off the slopes, takes place at altitude, one more reason to take the first day gently.
