Champéry is a municipality in the district of Monthey, in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. In skiing terms it is one of the Swiss gateways to the Portes du Soleil, the French-Swiss ski domain whose figures, 600 km of pistes and 196 lifts, are attached to Champéry in our data. The skiing

Locally the lifts run from 1,050 m to 2,277 m, a vertical of 1,227 m. The village altitude is modest, so the lower slopes depend on a good winter, but the top station clears 2,200 m, and the higher reaches of the network are where the snow holds best through a season listed from December to April.

The value of a Portes du Soleil base is the sheer scale of what a single pass unlocks. With 600 km of pistes there is more skiing than anyone could cover in a week, and 196 lifts make the network dense enough to keep moving rather than queuing. The practical consequence is that a day on the Swiss side can be as full as a day spent travelling across the domain, and visitors who prefer a slower pace can happily ignore the 600 km figure altogether and treat Champéry as a mid-sized resort with a big pass attached.

Village character

Champéry is listed for traditional charm and scenic views. It is an established Valais municipality with a life of its own rather than a purpose-built station, which is exactly the kind of base the traditional-charm label implies, and its position on the Swiss side of a cross-border domain gives it a quieter identity than the larger French bases. The views over the surrounding peaks are the other half of its appeal.
