Head of the Val di Fassa

Canazei, Cianacei to its Ladin-speaking residents, is a comune at the upper end of the Val di Fassa in Trentino, part of the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region of northern Italy. It sits about 110 km north-east of Trento. The name comes from the Latin cannicetus, meaning a cane thicket, a reminder that people were naming this valley long before anyone thought of building a lift.

The skiing

Canazei’s own ski area, the Belvedere/Col Rodella/Ciampac/Buffaure sector shared with Campitello, Alba and Pozza di Fassa, has 55.2 km of piste and 35 lifts. From Belvedere, lifts connect onward to the Sella Ronda, the circuit around the Sella massif that links four valleys for a combined 500 km, and both sit within Dolomiti Superski, a pass network of 1,200 km and 450 lifts across a dozen valleys reached mostly by bus. The important local numbers are the altitudes: lifts from Canazei rise from a base at 1,465 m to 2,950 m, a vertical of 1,485 m, which is a substantial drop for a village base. A top station at nearly 3,000 m gives Canazei a real advantage in snow reliability. The runs above 2,200 m keep their cover through a season that runs from December to April, and the highest sectors are where conditions hold longest in spring.

As with any Superski base, the appeal is breadth: an intermediate skier can spend an entire week here and still not see the whole network, while beginners and experts will find their own terrain within it. Because the pass covers so much ground, where you stay matters less than how you plan each day.

The lift count of 450 across the pass is also a reminder that Superski is a network of many separate valleys rather than one giant bowl, so a day’s skiing here is as much about route-finding as about individual runs. Canazei’s position at the head of the Val di Fassa, with lifts rising to 2,950 m, gives it one of the higher starting points on the pass among the resorts in this guide, and that altitude is worth having in an early or late-season week when the lower valleys are thin.

Village and setting

Canazei is listed for traditional charm and scenic views. As a comune at the top of a valley it is a real community rather than a purpose-built station, sharing its Ladin language and culture with neighbouring Campitello di Fassa a little further down the valley. The Dolomites around it supply the scenery, and the higher lifts open up wide views across the range.
