Andermatt

At the crossroads of Switzerland

Andermatt is a mountain village and municipality in the canton of Uri, sitting at 1,437 m at the centre of the Saint-Gotthard Massif. Its position is the historic crossing point of Switzerland’s north-south and east-west routes, which is a large part of why a village exists here at all. Altdorf, the cantonal capital, is some 28 km to the north.

The skiing

The SkiArena is a big, high domain: 180 km of pistes served by 22 lifts, rising from 1,444 m to 2,963 m. The lift count is the number to notice. Twenty-two lifts for 180 km means each lift opens up a great deal of terrain, and long runs rather than short hops; it also means the area is spread out, so you will spend the day travelling across it rather than lapping one sector. For skiers who like the feeling of a journey, that is a virtue rather than a drawback.

The top station at 2,963 m is nearly 800 m above the 2,200 m line at which altitude begins to make a real difference to snow reliability, and the site tags Andermatt as snow-sure. The vertical is more than 1,500 m. Andermatt is also tagged for off-piste, and that, together with the altitude, is its calling card: this is a mountain that advanced skiers pick for the snow and the freedom rather than for the grooming. No difficulty split is published, and nothing in the numbers suggests a beginners’ resort; confident intermediates and above will get the most from it, and the sparse lift network rewards those who plan their day.

Village and setting

Because Andermatt is a genuine village with a history of its own, it feels different from a purpose-built base. The scenery of the Gotthard massif, which the village sits in the middle of, earns the resort its scenic-views tag, and the sense of being at a point where the country’s routes converge gives the place an atmosphere that newer resorts lack. The village altitude of 1,437 m also means you are already high before the first lift, and with the lift base at 1,444 m the skiing effectively starts at village level.

Practicalities

The season runs from December to April. Zurich is the nearest major airport, roughly 94 km away as the crow flies; the 28 km to Altdorf gives a sense of how far Andermatt lies from the lowlands, and the transfer is a proper journey into the mountains rather than a quick hop.
