Zauchensee

A World Cup hill, not a town

Zauchensee is not a town in its own right. It is a place within the municipality of Altenmarkt im Pongau, in Salzburg state, and it exists on the map for two reasons: its ski resort and its role as a venue for the Alpine Ski World Cup. That combination usually means a hill with a proper race piste and the infrastructure to stage an event, and the numbers back that up.

The skiing

Zauchensee’s own slopes cover 45 km served by 16 lifts, between a base at 1,350 m and a top at 2,188 m. The base is the notable figure: at 1,350 m it is well above the valley-floor bases of most Austrian resorts (Wagrain, in the same Ski Amadé group, starts at 900 m), and the entire 838 m of vertical is above that level. Zauchensee is flagged snow-sure in our data, and while the top station stops just short of the altitude where thin air alone settles the question, the high base is the practical reason the flag is justified. It is also flagged for modern lifts and scenic views.

Sixteen lifts for 45 km is roughly one lift per 2.8 km, a comfortable ratio. There is no difficulty breakdown in our records, but a resort that stages World Cup racing will have at least one steep, well-prepared piste alongside the rest, and the seamless lift link onward to Snow Space Salzburg’s 210 km is enough to fill a week without repeating yourself too often.

Snow Space Salzburg and Ski Amadé

Zauchensee’s lifts connect seamlessly, via Flachauwinkl and the Shuttleberg, into Snow Space Salzburg, 210 km of piste served by around 70 lifts, alongside Flachau, Wagrain, Alpendorf and Kleinarl. The wider Ski Amadé pass then extends access, by bus, across a 760 km Salzburg-region network, and Zauchensee’s high base makes it the natural one to head for when conditions lower down are marginal.

Place and context

Because Zauchensee is a place rather than a town, the administrative home is Altenmarkt im Pongau, and the resort’s identity is bound up with the ski hill and the racing rather than with a historic centre. That has consequences for the kind of holiday it offers: expect a resort whose reason for being is the skiing, with the World Cup pedigree as the badge of quality, rather than a market town that happens to have lifts.

Practicalities

Salzburg airport is roughly 65 km away as the crow flies. The season runs December to April, and with everything above 1,350 m the April end of that range is more dependable here than at lower Salzburg resorts. No official resort website is listed in our records.
