High on the Georgian Military Highway

Gudauri is a ski resort in Georgia, laid out on a south-facing plateau of the Greater Caucasus at an elevation of 2,200 m. It sits in Kazbegi Municipality along the Georgian Military Highway, the road that climbs towards the Jvari Pass, some 120 km north of the capital, Tbilisi. This is not a valley village with lifts added later; it is a resort that exists because of the mountain, and its position on the plateau puts the accommodation at a height most Alpine resorts only reach by chairlift.

Treeless terrain from 2,196 m to 3,307 m

The lift system starts at 2,196 m and climbs to 3,307 m, serving 70 km of pistes with 15 lifts. The whole area lies above the tree line, so the pistes are open, wide and exposed in the best sense: the views stretch across the Caucasus and there is nothing to funnel you onto a fixed line. That openness is what makes Gudauri’s off-piste rating so relevant. With slopes that Wikipedia notes are considered avalanche-safe, the terrain between and beyond the pistes is a large part of why skiers come here, and heliskiing is available throughout the season for those who want more.

Altitude does real work for snow reliability at these heights. A base above 2,000 m and a top above 3,300 m mean the December to April season runs on natural cold rather than snowmaking, and the resort’s snow-sure rating reflects that. The lifts are rated as modern, which matters on a mountain this exposed: fast uplift keeps time in the wind to a minimum. The vertical of roughly 1,100 m is solid, and 70 km with 15 lifts is a manageable area to learn in a few days.

Gudauri rewards confident skiers who value open terrain and off-piste freedom over a big kilometre count, and anyone who wants to combine a ski trip with a country as distinctive as Georgia. The scenery is a feature in its own right: a high, treeless plateau in the Greater Caucasus is unlike anything in the Alps.

Getting there
