Palandöken

A mountain on the edge of a high city

Palandöken is a 3,271 m tectonic mountain in Erzurum Province, Turkey, and its defining feature is proximity: the summit is only 10 km from the centre of Erzurum, a city that itself sits at 1,950 m. Few ski mountains of this height stand so close to a city, and fewer still to a city already at nearly 2,000 m. The ski area occupies the mountain’s slopes, and the site tags it for snow reliability, off-piste terrain and scenic views.

Altitude first

The elevation figures are the reason to look at Palandöken. The base is at 2,200 m, a figure that most Alpine resorts only reach at their top stations, and the lifts climb to 3,176 m, about 100 m below the summit. The whole of the 976 m vertical lies above 2,200 m, the level at which altitude does real work for snow, and that is the basis of the snow-sure tag. The season runs from December to April, and the altitude makes the shoulder months more dependable than at lower resorts.

The piste count is small: 28 km on 12 lifts. That is fewer than 2.5 km of piste per lift, a dense network for a compact area, and it means the marked skiing can be covered in a day or two. The off-piste tag is what changes the calculation. A mountain rising to 3,271 m with lifts to 3,176 m and a base at 2,200 m offers a great deal of terrain that is not on the piste map, and for skiers who come for that, 28 km is not the relevant number. The difficulty split is not recorded in our data.

Erzurum

The nearness of a city at 1,950 m is the other distinction. It means the resort can be reached from the city rather than requiring a mountain base, and it puts Erzurum’s airport roughly 16 km away as the crow flies, an exceptionally short distance between a runway and a lift. The site does not tag Palandöken for traditional character or après-ski, which is consistent with a ski area defined by its mountain and its neighbouring city rather than by a resort village. The scenic-views tag follows from a summit well above 3,000 m looking out over a high plateau city.

Practical

Erzurum airport is roughly 16 km away as the crow flies. The season runs from December to April. We do not hold an official website for the resort in our data, so passes and lift status should be checked locally.
