Madonna di Campiglio

A small village at the gate of the Brenta Dolomites

Madonna di Campiglio is a village and ski resort in north-east Italy, a frazione of the comune of Pinzolo in the Val Rendena. It lies at 1,522 m and has only about 1,000 inhabitants, which makes it small for the size of ski area attached to it. The village is the main point of access to the Brenta Dolomites and their famous via ferrata; the lift to Passo Grostè delivers walkers directly to the northern end of the via ferrata network, which says something about the terrain the ski lifts climb into.

The ski area

The area around the village has 150 km of pistes and, in our data, 60 lifts (Wikipedia counts 57), with a combined uplift capacity of more than 31,000 people per hour, a figure that accounts for the site’s modern-lifts rating. The lifts run from 1,520 m at village level to 2,504 m in our data; Wikipedia gives 2,600 m as the high point. Either way the top is above the 2,200 m mark where altitude begins to help with snow, and the base is a healthy 1,520 m.

The pistes link with those of Pinzolo, Folgarida and Marilleva to give 156 km of interconnected runs, and the whole belongs to the wider Skirama Dolomiti pass. There is also a 50,000 m² snow park and 40 km of Nordic skiing tracks. No easy, intermediate and expert breakdown is published in our data, but the lift count and capacity are those of a resort built to move large numbers of skiers efficiently, which usually goes with wide, well-served pistes.

Village character

With a thousand residents at 1,522 m, Madonna di Campiglio is a village first, and the site rates it for traditional charm. The scenery rating is a matter of geography: the Brenta Dolomites are the view. The village also has a German name, Sankt Maria im Pein, a reminder that this corner of Italy has had more than one language over the centuries.

Who it suits

Skiers who want a proper village with a large, efficiently lifted area above it, and anyone for whom the mountains themselves matter as much as the pistes; the via ferrata access hints at what the summer trade looks like. Freestylers get a large snow park, and cross-country skiers a serious network of their own.

Practical

Bolzano (BZO) is the nearest airport, roughly 47 km away as the crow flies. The season runs from December to April. Lift and pass details are on the resort’s official website.
