A Valais village whose name means bath

Leukerbad is a municipality in the district of Leuk in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. Its names tell you what the village has long been known for: Leukerbad in German, Loèche-les-Bains in French, Leiggerbad in the local Walliser German dialect and simply ds Baadu to residents, all of them built on the word for bath. The skiing is the other side of the village’s identity: 60 km of pistes and 9 lifts on the slopes above.

The skiing

Nine lifts for 60 km is a lean network, nearly 7 km of piste per lift, so the runs are long relative to the number of lifts. Nine lifts also means a piste map you can hold in your head after a morning, which for a village whose visitors come for more than skiing is no bad thing. The lifts climb from 1,411 m to 2,610 m, a vertical of about 1,200 m, and the top station is comfortably above 2,200 m, so altitude helps the upper slopes hold snow through the December-to-April season. Leukerbad is an established municipality rather than a purpose-built station. The traditional-charm rating and the bath-related names point to a place whose visitors have historically come for reasons other than skiing, with the lifts as an addition to the village rather than its reason for existing. That tends to mean a village with more going on off the slopes than a pure ski station of the same size.

Who it suits

Skiers who value a short, relaxed day on the mountain followed by an afternoon in the village; families who do not need a huge area; and anyone combining skiing with a non-skiing partner. Experts will run out of terrain quickly, though 1,200 m of vertical means the runs they do have are proper descents.

Practical
