Turin is the airport the French and Italian Alps share. In our database, 72 resorts lie within 250 km of the runway, and the 20 closest are split almost evenly between the two countries: Val Cenis and Val d’Isère are both 59 km away as the crow flies, Pila is 64 km, Sauze d’Oulx and Sestriere on the Via Lattea 65 to 66 km, and the 3 Vallées, Paradiski, Espace Killy and Serre Chevalier are all within 90 km. It is also the cheapest big ski airport in the Alps: the Via Lattea’s 400 km cost €58.50 a day, Bardonecchia €52, Val Cenis €49.50. This guide ranks the 20 nearest, gives the day pass for each and says which to pick.

The map explains the list. Turin’s airport at Caselle sits north of the city, and the Alps curve around it from the Aosta valley in the north-west to the Susa valley in the west. The Fréjus road tunnel at Bardonecchia leads straight into the Maurienne and the Tarentaise, which is why Val d’Isère is as close to Turin as to any French airport, and the Mont Blanc tunnel at Courmayeur leads to Chamonix. Straight-line distances flatter Zermatt, which is three hours away through the Aosta valley and over the border, and the Tarentaise villages, which are two to two and a half hours through the tunnel.

Under 70 km: the Via Lattea, the Aosta valley and the Haute Maurienne

The Via Lattea is Turin’s home ski area and the best-value big area in the Alps. Sauze d’Oulx (65 km) and Sestriere (66 km) share 400 km of slopes on 71 lifts with Montgenèvre over the French border, 96 km of them easy, 220 km intermediate and 84 km expert, with a top at 2,823 m. The Italian pass is €58.50, which at €0.15 per kilometre of piste is one of the three best ratios in Europe in our index. Sestriere, at 2,035 m, is the highest base in Italy after Cervinia, snow-sure and purpose-built for the 2006 Olympics; Sauze d’Oulx at 1,509 m is the lively, après-ski village; Montgenèvre (79 km, €56 for its own domain) is the French, family end. Bardonecchia (75 km) is technically part of the Via Lattea but skis as its own 100 km area, 54% easy, for €52, the cheapest Italian pass in our index, and it has a direct train from Turin.

Pila (64 km) is the Aosta valley’s local mountain: 70 km on 11 lifts from 1,800 m to 2,700 m, reached by gondola from Aosta town, with Mont Blanc views and a €58 pass. Further up the valley, La Thuile (79 km, €61) shares the 160 km Espace San Bernardo with La Rosière in France, Courmayeur (84 km, €69) sits under Mont Blanc, and Cervinia (82 km, €63) is the Italian side of the 322 km Zermatt-Cervinia area with a 2,050 m base and a November to May season; see Cervinia vs Zermatt.

Val Cenis (59 km) is the surprise closest resort: 125 km of 58% easy terrain in the Haute Maurienne, a top at 2,800 m and a €49.50 pass, the cheapest in this list, reached through the Fréjus tunnel in about 90 minutes. It is one of the best-value family resorts in France and almost unknown outside it.

59 to 91 km: the Tarentaise and Serre Chevalier

Through the Fréjus tunnel and over the Col de l’Iseran’s winter road via Bourg-Saint-Maurice lie the big French names. Espace Killy (Val d’Isère 59 km, Tignes 65 km): 300 km on 79 lifts, a top at 3,456 m, 88 km of expert terrain, glacier skiing and a season into May. Val d’Isère’s local pass is €75, Tignes’ €68; our guide to Val Thorens vs Tignes compares the high-altitude options. Paradiski (Les Arcs 78 km, La Plagne 83 km): 425 km on 132 lifts, 57% easy, €71 for Les Arcs alone. Les 3 Vallées (Courchevel 83 km, Val Thorens 84 km, Les Menuires and Méribel 88 km): 600 km on 166 lifts, 56% easy, €84.20, the biggest ski area in range; our guide to Courchevel vs Méribel vs Val Thorens picks the village. Serre Chevalier (90 km, through the Montgenèvre pass): 250 km on 61 lifts, 55% easy, tree-lined and traditional, €65.50.

In road terms, all of these are two to two and a half hours from Turin, which is why the airport is a serious alternative to Geneva and Lyon for the Tarentaise when fares are lower. Our Geneva guide covers the same resorts from the north.

Getting from Turin airport to the resorts

Turin Caselle has a railway link to Turin’s Dora and Porta Susa stations in about 30 minutes. From Porta Nuova or Porta Susa, regional trains reach Oulx (for Sauze d’Oulx and Sestriere by bus, about 60 minutes), Bardonecchia (75 minutes, with the lifts a short walk from the station) and Aosta (two hours, for the Pila gondola and the Cervinia bus); TGV services to Modane and Chambéry continue into France. Rough road times from the airport: Sauze d’Oulx and Sestriere 75 to 90 minutes, Bardonecchia 75 minutes, Pila 90 minutes, Val Cenis 90 minutes through the Fréjus tunnel, Cervinia and La Thuile about 2 hours, Val d’Isère and Tignes 2 hours 30, the 3 Vallées and Paradiski 2 hours 30 to 3 hours, Zermatt (Täsch) 3 hours. The Fréjus tunnel toll is about €50 each way for a car, which matters for a hire-car trip into France. Shared transfers run to Sestriere, Sauze, Cervinia and the main Tarentaise resorts in winter; the airport lists ground transport.
