Geneva’s advantage over Munich, Innsbruck and Zurich is not the number of resorts but how close the big ones are. The first 600 km area is 44 km from the runway; from Munich the first big area is 99 km away. Our guide to resorts closest to Munich, Zurich, Geneva and Milan compares the four hubs, and our Milan guide covers Malpensa and Bergamo.
Under 60 km: the Portes du Soleil, the Grand Massif and the Aravis
The Portes du Soleil is the reason Geneva is a ski airport. Twelve villages on both sides of the French-Swiss border share 600 km of slopes and 196 lifts, 54% of them easy, and four of the entry points are in this list: Les Gets (44 km), Morzine (47 km), Avoriaz (51 km) and Châtel (56 km), with Champéry (59 km) on the Swiss side. Morzine is the town with après-ski, Les Gets the family village, Avoriaz the car-free, ski-in ski-out station at 1,800 m with the area’s snow-sure flag and four snow parks, Châtel and Champéry the traditional ends. The area pass is €69 to €73; Les Gets and Châtel also sell local passes at €56 and €55 that cover their own sectors. The weakness is height: Les Gets tops out at 2,002 m and the area opens late, on 19 December 2026 in our data, apart from Champéry on 28 November. At €0.12 per km of piste, the area pass is the best value in Europe in our index.
The Grand Massif (Morillon 47 km, Samoëns 51 km, Flaine 52 km) is 265 km on 69 lifts, 51% easy, for €63, opening 5 December. Flaine is the purpose-built, snow-sure station at 1,600 m; Samoëns and Morillon are old villages at 700 m with a gondola up.
La Clusaz (44 km) is the closest resort of all and a self-contained one: 132 km on 49 lifts, 54% easy, a traditional village, an off-piste flag and a €56.50 pass. Its neighbour Le Grand-Bornand is not yet in our database.
58 to 73 km: Mont Blanc
Evasion Mont-Blanc (Megève 58 km, Saint-Gervais 61 km) is 445 km on 108 lifts, 36% easy, for €65, at €0.15 per km the third-best value in Europe. Megève is the smart, gourmet end; Saint-Gervais the spa town. Both are low, with a top station at 2,353 m. Les Contamines (67 km), 120 km on 24 lifts, sells a Mont Blanc Escape pass for €54.50. Chamonix (68 km) is the expert’s choice: 152 km in several separate areas, only 24% easy, an off-piste flag, the Vallée Blanche and the biggest vertical drop in our database at 2,807 m up to 3,842 m. Its €47 Le Pass is a limited ticket; the Mont Blanc Unlimited costs more. On the Swiss side, Villars (73 km) is 100 km on 23 lifts with 76% easy terrain, the most beginner-friendly profile in this list, for 75 CHF.
83 to 92 km: Verbier, the Aosta valley and Paradiski
Past 80 km the choice becomes serious skiing. Verbier (87 km) is the 4 Vallées: 410 km on 82 lifts, 26% easy, 103 km of expert terrain, a top station at 3,330 m, freeride flags and a 92 CHF pass, about €97, opening 14 November 2026. Nendaz shares the same area for 89 CHF. Our guide to Zermatt vs Verbier compares it with Switzerland’s other big name.
Through the Mont Blanc tunnel, Courmayeur (83 km) has 100 km on 33 lifts under Mont Blanc for €69, and La Thuile (87 km) shares the 160 km Espace San Bernardo with La Rosière (89 km) across the French border, €61 from the Italian side and €58 from the French. Further south, Valmorel (90 km) is 165 km with 70% easy runs, the highest easy share of any French resort in our data, for €58.50, and Les Arcs (92 km) is the edge of Paradiski: 425 km on 132 lifts with La Plagne, 57% easy, a top at 3,226 m, €71 for Les Arcs alone. Just outside the top 20 are Crans-Montana (106 km), Val d’Isère and Tignes; see Val Thorens vs Tignes for the high-altitude options.
Getting from Geneva airport to the resorts
Geneva airport has a French sector, so cars hired there can be driven into France without crossing the Swiss customs post, and a railway station under the terminal. Rough road times, longer on Saturday changeover days: La Clusaz 60 minutes, Les Gets and Morzine 75 minutes, Flaine, Samoëns and Megève 75 to 90 minutes, Chamonix 75 minutes by motorway, Villars 90 minutes, Verbier 2 hours, Courmayeur 2 hours through the tunnel, Les Arcs and Valmorel 2 hours 30. By train, Geneva to Cluses (for the Grand Massif), Sallanches (for Megève) and Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet (for the Mont Blanc Express to Chamonix) takes 60 to 90 minutes with a change at Annemasse or Bellegarde; Aigle serves Villars and Champéry, Martigny serves Verbier by cable car from Le Châble, and Bourg-Saint-Maurice serves Les Arcs by funicular. Shared shuttle transfers run to every French resort in this list; the airport lists current options. Saturday is the busy day on the A40 motorway; a Sunday arrival avoids the worst of it.
