Munich has the most flights of any airport serving the Alps and no ski resort within an hour of it. The airport sits north of the city, so the closest resort in our database, Reit im Winkl, is 90 km away as the crow flies, and the 20 nearest all lie between 90 and 132 km. What Munich offers instead is choice: 76 resorts within 250 km, including the SkiWelt, Kitzbühel, the Skicircus, the Zillertal and every German resort worth the name. This guide ranks the 20 closest, gives the day pass price for each and says which to pick.

Munich’s own Bavarian hills, Sudelfeld, Spitzingsee and Brauneck, are not yet in our database; they are 60 to 80 km from the city and popular for day trips. Oberstdorf and Balderschwang in the Allgäu are in the database but fall outside the top 20 at over 130 km.
The German resorts: close, cheap, small
Four German resorts make the top 20, and they share a profile: small areas, low prices, easy day trips. Reit im Winkl (90 km) has 44 km on the Winklmoosalm-Steinplatte, which straddles the Austrian border, 48% of it easy, for €66. Garmisch-Partenkirchen (108 km) has 40 km on the Garmisch Classic for €69, and shares the town with the Zugspitze (119 km), 20 km of slopes on Germany’s highest mountain, with a base at 2,000 m and a top at 2,720 m, the highest in Germany, open from November. Berchtesgaden (121 km) has 22 km on the Jenner for €47, the cheapest pass in this list. The German median day pass in our index is €59 against Austria’s €80.
None of the four is a week’s destination for a strong skier. All four are a day on the slopes from Munich by car or train, and Garmisch is the one with a proper town and direct trains from Munich central station in about 80 minutes.
The Tyrolean belt: SkiWelt, Ski Juwel, KitzSki
Cross the border and the areas grow. The SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental is the closest big area to Munich: 284 km on 90 lifts, entered from Scheffau, Söll, Ellmau, Going or Westendorf at 99 to 110 km, with 42% easy terrain and a €79.50 pass. Its weakness is a top station of 1,957 m, so it is a December-to-March area rather than an April one; it closes on 29 March 2027 in our data. Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau (Alpbach and Niederau, 102 to 106 km) has 113 km on 45 lifts for €71.50, a quieter and cheaper alternative. St Johann in Tirol (103 km) is 43 km, 53% easy, €65, a beginner’s resort. KitzSki (110 km) is Kitzbühel: 234 km on 56 lifts, 54% easy, the Hahnenkamm, a medieval town and the highest price in this list at €83. Seefeld (122 km) is small on the downhill side, 37 km for €59.50, and famous for cross-country.
The big two: Skicircus and Zillertal
Beyond 110 km lie two areas that justify a week. The Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn (113 to 126 km) has 270 km on 70 lifts, 52% easy, and is sold on the €82 Ski ALPIN CARD, which also covers Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier at Kaprun: 408 km on one pass. Saalbach is the lively base, Fieberbrunn the freeride one; our Salzburg airport guide covers the same area from the other side, and Salzburg is the closer airport at 46 to 53 km.
The Zillertal (124 to 132 km) has the Zillertal Arena, 150 km on 52 lifts from Zell am Ziller or Gerlos, and Mayrhofen, 142 km on 58 lifts with 23% expert terrain, 1,870 m of vertical and the Harakiri, one of the steepest pistes in the Alps. Both cost €82. The Hintertux glacier at the head of the valley is open all year. Our Innsbruck airport guide covers the Zillertal from 41 km away; from Munich it is a two-hour transfer.
For a direct comparison of the two most popular choices in this section, see Mayrhofen vs Saalbach.
Getting from Munich airport to the resorts
The airport is 30 km north-east of the city, and the S-Bahn to Munich central station takes about 40 minutes. From there, trains reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen in about 80 minutes, Kufstein and Wörgl (for the SkiWelt) in 60 to 80 minutes, Kitzbühel and St Johann in about two hours, Jenbach (for the Zillertal railway to Mayrhofen) in about 90 minutes and Zell am See in two and a half hours. Rough road times from the airport, longer in winter traffic: Reit im Winkl and Garmisch about 1 hour 45, the SkiWelt villages and Kitzbühel about two hours, the Zillertal 2 hours 15, Saalbach 2 hours 30. Shared transfers run from the airport to most Tyrolean resorts; the airport lists current options. A hire car pays off for the SkiWelt and Ski Amadé, where you may want to move between villages.
Munich is the right airport when it has the cheapest flight. If Innsbruck or Salzburg is close in price, they are closer to the mountains: 88 resorts within 250 km of Innsbruck and 75 of Salzburg, with the first big area 41 to 53 km from the runway rather than 99. Our guide to resorts closest to Munich, Zurich, Geneva and Milan compares the four hubs, and our Geneva and Zurich airport guides rank the 20 closest resorts to each.
