Salzburg is the second of Austria’s three ski airports. Innsbruck serves Tyrol and the Arlberg; Munich has the most flights; Salzburg is the gateway to Salzburgerland, the Pinzgau and the eastern edge of Tyrol, and the road times from it are short. The airport is 4 km from the city centre.
Within 50 km: Berchtesgaden, the Hochkönig and the Skicircus
Berchtesgaden (18 km) is across the German border and the closest ski resort to Salzburg by a wide margin: 22 km of slopes on the Jenner, 9 lifts, a top station at 1,874 m and a €47 day pass. It is a day trip from the city, not a week’s destination. Reit im Winkl (42 km), also in Germany, has 44 km on the Winklmoosalm-Steinplatte and a €66 pass.
The Hochkönig (41 to 46 km) is the first big Austrian area: 120 km on 33 lifts, entered from Maria Alm, Dienten or Mühlbach, with a top at 1,900 m and a family reputation. It belongs to the Ski Amadé network, whose 760 km across five regions can be bought on one pass. The Hochkönig’s own day pass was €78.50 in 2025/26.
The Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn (46 to 53 km) is the biggest ski area within an hour of the airport: 270 km of slopes on 70 lifts, tops at 2,020 to 2,096 m, entered from Leogang, Fieberbrunn or Saalbach. Saalbach’s flags in our data are lively, après-ski, modern lifts and varied terrain; Fieberbrunn’s are freeride and off-piste. The 2026/27 day pass is the €82 Ski ALPIN CARD, which also covers Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn at Kaprun, 408 km in total, the best coverage per euro of any pass in this list. Opening is planned for 27 November 2026. For Kitzbühel against the Arlberg, see Kitzbühel vs St. Anton; for Saalbach against the Zillertal’s main town, see Mayrhofen vs Saalbach.
50 to 65 km: Zell am See-Kaprun, Ski Amadé, KitzSki and the SkiWelt
- Zell am See-Kaprun (54 to 60 km). Zell am See has 77 km above a lake, with a top at 2,000 m; Kaprun’s Kitzsteinhorn glacier has 62 km up to 3,029 m, the highest lift in this list, and opens on 10 October 2026, the earliest of any resort within reach of Salzburg. Both are on the €82 Ski ALPIN CARD. Zell am See’s pass rose 3.8% this season, one of the ten biggest increases in Europe in our index.
- Snow Space Salzburg (Flachau, Wagrain, Kleinarl; 56 to 63 km). 210 km on 70 lifts, top 2,000 m, the core of Ski Amadé and one of the best-connected areas in the country. Flachau is tagged for night skiing and value; Wagrain for families and snow-sure runs. The day pass was €79 in 2025/26; Kleinarl’s Shuttleberg pass is €81 for 2026/27. Filzmoos (20 km, €70) and Radstadt (31 km, €75) are the small, quiet Ski Amadé villages nearby.
- KitzSki (59 km). Kitzbühel has 234 km on 56 lifts, a medieval town, the Hahnenkamm downhill and the highest price in this list at €83. Its top of 2,000 m is modest, so check the base early and late in the season.
- The SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental (59 to 64 km). 284 km on 90 lifts, the most lifts of any area near Salzburg, from Going, Ellmau or Scheffau. Day pass €79.50, opening 5 December 2026, top station only 1,957 m. Roughly the same distance from Salzburg as from Innsbruck.
- Ramsau am Dachstein (64 km). A 13 km cross-country and family resort with the Dachstein glacier at 2,700 m and a €54 pass.
Just beyond the top 20, and worth knowing: Schladming (68 km, 123 km of slopes, night skiing, €81.50), Obertauern (73 km, 100 km of slopes, snow-sure and ski-in ski-out, opening 20 November 2026, €72) and Bad Gastein (76 km, 200 km on the Ski Gastein pass, thermal spa, €81.50). Obertauern is the most snow-sure non-glacier resort in reach of Salzburg, with a village at 1,740 m.
Getting from Salzburg airport to the resorts
The airport is 4 km west of the city and 10 minutes from Salzburg’s main railway station, which changes the transfer picture: Zell am See, Saalfelden (for Leogang and Maria Alm), Bischofshofen (for the Hochkönig and Ski Amadé), Radstadt, Schladming, St Johann in Tirol and Kitzbühel all have direct trains. Rough road times, which winter conditions will lengthen: Berchtesgaden 30 minutes, the Hochkönig 50 minutes, Saalbach, Zell am See and Flachau about an hour, Kitzbühel and the SkiWelt 75 to 90 minutes. Shared transfers run to Saalbach, Zell am See and the Ski Amadé villages; the airport lists current bus and transfer options. A hire car is worth it if you want to move between Ski Amadé regions.
If Salzburg flights are expensive, Munich is the alternative for the same resorts. Our guide to resorts closest to Munich, Zurich, Geneva and Milan covers it, and the Munich airport ranking lists 76 resorts, and our Munich airport guide ranks the 20 closest, and our Geneva and Zurich guides cover the western Alps.
