Start with ability: the share of easy, intermediate and expert pistes decides whether a resort is fun or frustrating for you. Then think about who is coming, because a solo mileage trip and a family week need very different mountains. Finally weigh a few practical factors against each other: size of the ski area in piste kilometres, altitude and snow reliability, resort character from party town to quiet village, and how far you are willing to travel. This finder automates exactly that process, scoring every resort in our database on those stats against your answers.

Look at the kilometres of easy runs and their share of the whole area, not the total size. A good learning resort has roughly 20 km or more of blue runs, with gentle terrain making up a third or more of the pistes, ideally reachable straight from the village. Modern chairlifts and gondolas beat draglifts when you are new, and a dedicated beginner zone keeps first days relaxed. Long verticals and glacier steeps look impressive but are wasted on a first week.

Altitude is the biggest single factor. In the Alps, a top station above roughly 2,200 m and a base above 1,500 m usually means reliable snow from December to April, and glacier resorts stretch that even further. North-facing slopes, extensive snowmaking and a cold local climate all add reliability. Latitude matters too: Scandinavian resorts stay snow-sure at much lower altitudes because winters are simply colder and longer there.

Bigger is better only if you will actually use the extra terrain. Confident intermediates gain the most from mega areas, where every day can cover new pistes. Beginners rarely leave a handful of lifts, and families often prefer a compact area where nobody gets lost and the day ends near the accommodation. Big areas also mean pricier lift passes and busier pistes. For most one-week trips, an area of about 50 to 150 km of pistes is the sweet spot.

The Alps have the deepest family infrastructure: ski kindergartens, English-speaking ski schools and huge beginner areas, with Austria and Italy typically friendlier on price than top French or Swiss names. Scandinavia is superb with young children thanks to gentle slopes, empty pistes and a relaxed pace. Eastern Europe offers the best value for a first family trip, and North America counters longer travel times with excellent ski schools and service. Pick the region by travel time and budget, then choose a resort with a high share of easy runs.

Region works as a hard filter, everything else is weighted. Each resort's points are then normalised against the maximum possible for your answers to give the match percentage, and the "why it fits" notes list the stats that earned those points.
